QED to Commercialise BT's Optical Fibre Amplifier Patents
Following on from a review of its patent portfolio, British
Telecommunications plc, the UK's leading telecommunications operator has appointed
QED to commercialise its patent portfolio in the area of optical fibre amplifiers.
QED is actively seeking licensees for these patents.
Optical fibre amplifiers are used in telecommunication links to boost signals
in long distance links. They amplify optical signals without the need for the
data to pass through an electronic stage, and can amplify different light wavelengths
at the same time. They are an important component of WDM (Wavelength Division
Multiplexing) and DWDM (Dense WDM) systems currently being deployed by the telecommunication
industry in its drive to provide dramatically higher carrying capacity world-wide.
The patents arose from pioneering work carried out at BT Laboratories on optimising
the efficiency and bandwidth of optical fibre amplifiers. .
Peter Ross, Associate Director of Licensing, said: "QED is working with
a wide range of technology-rich companies to help them generate revenue from their
considerable investment in research and development. The telecommunications business
is one of QED's key focus industries. We believe BT's Optical Fibre Amplifier
patents have significant commercial value and are pleased that BT has chosen QED
to realise this potential"
