QED Brings Together Revolutionary Engine Maker
and Needed Fuel Injection Technology
In just over four months, an organization developing a radical
lightweight, high-powered diesel engine found and completed a licensing
arrangement with another organization that had the fuel injection
expertise they needed. QED brought them together on its yet2.com
marketplace web site.
LIM Technologies of Baltimore, MD, developers of the LIM diesel
engine, needed a unique fuel injection system for their 2-stroke,
3-cylinder prototype. “Even without a good fuel system, we
were already able to double the torque and increase the horse power;
with a modern fuel system we could likely double the horsepower
of similar-sized conventional diesels.” said LIM president
Jeffrey Klein. But LIM did not have fuel injection expertise in
house necessary to further control pollution, noise, and exhaust
fumes.
LIM published its technology need anonymously on yet2.com, QED’s
online marketplace for intellectual property. LIM was contacted
anonymously through yet2.com by Hastings Chariots—a rocket
designer located in Las Vegas, NV.
“Our primary customer is NASA,” explained Al Hastings,
president of Hastings Chariots. “We build sounding rockets.
But we had the extensive expertise in high-pressure fuel injection
that LIM needed.” Within four months, introductions, discussions,
technical evaluation, and negotiations were completed. Hastings
would be supplying the fuel injection for the LIM diesel. “With
Hastings’ fuel system, we should see another 50% horsepower
increase,” said LIM’s Klein.
LIM will demonstrate its new prototype with the Hastings supplied
fuel system in an automobile around the end of October, this year.
“This may be something of a record,” said Phil Stern,
CEO of QED. “Traditionally, licensing deals take as long as
18-24 months. But a company publicizing its technology need is in
a position to act immediately when someone else has a solution to
offer. We're finding that often, the solution comes from a completely
unforeseen place—LIM might not have thought to contact a rocket
company, but Hastings had the right solution for them even though
it had never been listed with us as being available for license.”
Thousands of technology needs and licensable technologies are
listed on the yet2.com marketplace by companies large and small.
yet2.com has facilitated thousands of introductions of the type
that lead to the LIM/Hastings licensing deal.
About LIM Technology
LIM Technology LLC of Baltimore, MD was established in 1999 to
develop the patented LIM engine, which has three events in its cycle:
ventilation, compression, and power. LIM type engines can be smaller
because each cylinder is capable of producing more power because
the cycle is cooler, scavenging is more complete, and nearly 40%
of the cycle is assigned the power stroke. In conventional engines,
less than 22% of the cycle is assigned to making power. http://www.limengine.com.
About Hastings Chariots
Hastings Chariots of Las Vegas, NV provides launch vehicles for
sub-orbital microgravity and hypersonic flight experiments. The
company was founded in 1993 to investigate innovative aircraft propulsion
technologies.
