QED appointed to license Deutsche Telekom optoelectronics patents

QED Intellectual Property Limited, the patent licensing arm of technology development and licensing company Scipher plc, today announces that it has been appointed by Deutsche Telekom AG ("Deutsche Telekom") to license a major part of its optoelectronic patent portfolio.

Deutsche Telekom has appointed QED to seek licensees for 96 patent families, comprising 542 patents and patent applications, dramatically increasing QED's portfolio of technologies to license. The patents cover inventions in optoelectronics including materials, photonic crystals, fibre-integrated microlenses, connectors, filters and optical integrated circuits.

The appointment was made after QED successfully acted for Deutsche Telekom on the sale of 14 optoelectronic patent families to ADC Telecommunications, Inc.

Peter Backes, the Manager for International Patent Affairs at Deutsche Telekom stated: "QED proved its capability in rapidly and efficiently selling some of our patents and we are happy to entrust them with generating new revenue from our optoelectronics technologies."

Dr Ken Gray, Chairman of Scipher, said: "This is a major step forward for Scipher and we are delighted that Deutsche Telekom have given us this opportunity. We will be using our extensive experience gained from successfully licensing other optoelectronic technologies to the telecoms industry worldwide."

Scipher, through QED, licenses patents on behalf of its clients under revenue sharing agreements. QED is currently working with many leading telecommunications companies including British Telecommunications, Royal KPN NV and Telstra to create value from their patents. Since March 2000, QED has been licensing BT's optical fibre amplifier technology to a number of the world's key optical fibre amplifier manufacturers that includes Furukawa Electric, Moritex, Alcatel and Mitsubishi Cable, earning revenue for both Scipher and BT which is expected to continue over the remaining lifetime of the patents.
