"QED To License PC TV Patent"

QED Intellectual Property Ltd, a Scipher company, has begun licensing patents which concern the integration of broadcast TV signals with PCs, to manufacturers of TV tuner cards.

TV tuner cards are commonly available from retail computer stores and once installed allow the user to watch TV on their PC whilst simultaneously using other PC applications. These 'add-on' cards retail between USD$100-$200. The United States market alone is currently worth in excess of $200m.

PCs are increasingly being sold with TV tuner cards pre-installed. The basic inventions detailed in the patents could also be fundamental to the booming set-top box and digitally integrated TV markets of the future. In addition to licensing these patents to companies who are already using the technology, QED will also be granting licences to companies who wish to incorporate it in their new developments.

Commenting for QED, Stephen Potter, Commercial Director, said: "We believe that the patent portfolio is fundamental in this area and that it is already widely being used in the TV tuner card market. We also believe that in the future this patent may have massive implications as the TV and PC industries converge."

Scipher is based in the United Kingdom. More information on Scipher and its companies is available on the Scipher web site at www.scipher.com
