Merger between Gramophone Co. and Columbia Graphophone Co. Ltd gives birth to Electrical and Musical Industries - EMI

1931
Alan Dower Blumlein and the EMI research labs (CRL) develop and create Stereo recording - UK patent number 394325.

1936
Jules Thorn floats Thorn Electrical Industries with a share capital of $150,000. Shares were 36 times oversubscribed.

 

1937
CRL creates a fully working electronic television, far more technologically advanced than anything previously developed.

1940
CRL demonstrates AI MKIV - the worlds first effective air borne radar system

1968
Sir Godfrey Hounsfield patents the CAT brain scanner based upon his work in computer tomography. This invention won him a Nobel Prize in 1979.

1971
The EMI - CAT brain scanner is installed in Atkinson Morely Hospital.

1973
CRL develops “Watermark” - a patented and highly innovative technique, dramatically improving fraud resistance on magnetic cards.

1979
Thorn Electrical Company and EMI merge to form Thorn EMI.

1985
EMI buys Inmos - creators of the Transputer - for £50m

 

1986
Inmos operation is sold for an equity stake in SGS Thomson (now ST Microelectronics). The IP for the innovative S-Ram processor is retained by Thorn EMI and licensed generating $150m.

1994
3D sound technology from two speakers invented by CRL scientists, is commercialised under the Sensaura Brand.

1995
Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Display technology, developed at Scipher, is licensed to major Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese companies.

1996
QED is one of three units of Thorn EMI that is subject of a management buyout, forming Scipher plc.

1999
QED announces deal with Imagination Technologies to license PC/TV tuner patents

1999
QED signs deal with BT to license their Erbium Doped Optical Fibre Amplifier patents.

2000
February - Scipher floated on the London Stock Exchange.

2001
February - QED opens an office in Tokyo.

2001
December - QED merges with the US IP firm Fairfield Resources International (FRI) and establishes a strategic in base in the United States.

2004
May - QED merges with Hillgate Patent services and becomes part of Innovation Development Limited.

2004
June - QED acquires PPL Therapeutics plc., creator of "Dolly the sheep."

2006
June - QED sells iFire Technology Corp's X-Ray imaging portfolio.
